Completed ACC Shu Roads Project 2006-2009: Australia-China Cooperation to Enhance the Knowledge and Impacts of Historical Culture through 3S Technologies in the Hanzhong Area of Western China. 中澳合作 在中国西部汉中地区应用3S技术促进历史古迹研究,提高历史文化影响 |
This international Project was developed by discussions and visits during 2005 after which the Australian side submitted a successful funding application to the Australia-China Council (ACC) in 2006. In China it has been supported since 2005 by Provincial and local Governments and has been carried out in close cooperation with members of the Hanzhong City Museum and the Chinese Academy of Sciences Institute of Soil and Water Conservation at Yangling in Shaanxi Province.
The website author's interest in the topic started in 1998 but it was not until 2005 during long service leave that he and others made a visit across the Qinling from Qin (Xi'an) to Hanzhong. The "story" of that visit is available on this website and can be directly accessed HERE. The Project arose from the dicussions there and later between various groups in Australia and China. The Qinling Plank Roads to Shu play a significant role in China's history and culture. To provide an introduction for English speaking people, the website author has prepared a document called: An introduction to the “Hard Roads to Shu”, their environment, history, and adventures since ancient times . You are welcome to read it to appreciate a little of the place of these roads in Chinese thinking.
The main project activity occurred between 2006 and 2009. The activity included an International Symposium, development of material in English and Chinese which provided new information about the Qinling Plank Roads to Shu and visits between countries. The result was a demonstration of how modern 3S technology can support historical research, help preserve history and be used for the development, promotion and support of historical and adventure tourism in the Mountainous regions crossed by China's ancient Qinling Shu Roads.
During the Project in 2008 there was a significant event in western China with the Sichuan Earthquake. The website author was at the time just leaving Hanzhong to return to Xi'an through the long tunnels of the new Xihan Expressway. He had been editing the final material for the publication of the 2007 Symposium Proceedings. Some of the events and feelings of that time were included in the report of that visit which can be accessed HERE. China and Chinese were affected visibly by that event and a massive reconstruction has since altered many of the Shu Road relic sites as people sought ways to provide valuable reconstruction work and support for the people of northern Sichuan. It is still a vivid memory.
The Project outcomes are briefly summarised in a Final Summary Overview Report and in more detail in the Project acquittal reports listed below. Support for the aims of the project in China has continued since 2009 and further outcomes arising from the collaboration of the principals can be found in the Website Main Menu, in the Main Page central links or under "What's New". |
